Read from left to right
Each pair of opening slots forms one match. Its winner moves to a single slot in the next column. Two neighboring winners then meet, and the pattern repeats until one champion remains. With eight entrants, three rounds of decisions determine the winner; larger power-of-two fields add more rounds.
Track dependencies
A semifinal choice depends on two earlier winners. If you replace one of those winners, the semifinal pick might refer to a team that is no longer in that match. The builder clears downstream choices along that branch to avoid an impossible bracket. Choices elsewhere remain because their entrants have not changed.
Check the order
The entry order establishes which teams can meet early and which cannot meet until later. For a seeded tournament, use the organizer’s exact bracket placement rather than merely listing teams by seed number. This tool does not assign seeds or infer a field; it follows the order you type.
Try a small example
Start with eight sample teams and choose a winner in every opening match. Then choose one second-round winner and change the first-round pick that fed that match. Observe which later slot clears. Practicing once makes it easier to spot a mistaken pick in a larger bracket before you print it.
Practical check
To see the structure, trace one opening match forward with a pencil. Draw a line from its winner slot to the next match, then another to the following round. Repeat for the other opening match that feeds the same branch. This physical tracing makes it clear why a change in one corner should not erase a winner on the opposite side.
